Spiritual Emphasis Day Impacts Cornerstone Students

Posted on: May 6th, 2016 by Admin

Cornerstone junior high and high school students soaked up Biblical teaching and spiritual renewal at Spiritual Emphasis Day on April 27, 2016. The theme of this year’s Spiritual Emphasis Day was “Made New” from 2 Corinthians 5:17:

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.”

Spiritual Emphasis Day is a full school day for our junior high and high school students to focus on their relationship with God through worship, main and breakout sessions with special speakers, and giving students the opportunity to pray with teachers and staff. Miss Sarah Mikan, Cornerstone art teacher and secondary chapel coordinator, oversaw the planning of the day. She says that her vision for the day was for God to impact each student with the words of 2 Corinthians 5:17. “The goal was for students to be renewed through Christ and in Christ to put off the old ways and walk in newness of life.”

Students attended main sessions with speaker Joshi Yesudasan, Worship Leader at Harvest Bible Chapel in DeKalb, and then chose breakout sessions to attend throughout the day. Breakout session themes were “Christ in Sports”, “Living through Loss, and “Self-Image and Identity in Christ.” Other sessions focused on continuous worship, teaching students to live out their faith, and also how to share their testimony.

Breakout session speakers included Chandler Harnish, former Northern Illinois University and NFL football player, Pastor Dan Gregory and his wife Jody from Fox Valley Reformed Church in Crystal Lake, Children’s Pastor Cory Whitford from Riverside Community Church in Machesney Park, Youth Pastor Kyle White from Crossview Church in Sycamore, Zac Whitfield, Founder and Director of Foundation Skate Ministry, Dave and Rennie Garda from Cadre Ministries in Sycamore, John Withum, Minister of Education from First Baptist Church of Aurora, along with Cornerstone’s junior high and high school principal, Drew Whitfield. Worship was led by Brendan Nelson from Christ Community Church in DeKalb, and also Nate Miller the Youth Pastor at First Baptist Church in Sycamore, along with Aaron Andries from the band Graveyards and Gardens, and Chance Hoffman a minister at River of Life Church in DeKalb.

Miss Mikan says that she found that students were positively affected by the Christ focused teaching and worship of the day. She wishes to thank Miss Rachel Schrank, Cornerstone Fourth Grade Teacher and Fine Arts Director, who started Spiritual Emphasis Day and trained Miss Mikan on how to plan this special event. Miss Mikan also sends a shout out to Cornerstone’s Worship Ensemble for all of their help with set up.
