Veterans Day Celebration: A Day to Honor All Who Served

Posted on: November 15th, 2016 by Admin

Cornerstone welcomed over fifty veterans to our Veterans Day celebration on Friday, November 11, 2016. Preschool students sang “You’re A Grand Old Flag,” and “This Land Is Your Land,” along with presentations from elementary and high school students. Cornerstone dad, Sergeant Ezequiel Mora, was our guest speaker. Sergeant Mora spent time in Iraq and Afghanistan stationed with the U.S. Army as a Paratrooper.

Each veteran who attended was honored with an introduction, and Kindergarten through twelfth grade students gave high fives to the veterans on their way back to class.

Mrs. Debbie Dwyer, Cornerstone preschool director and events coordinator, worked with Miss Sarah Kloster, Cornerstone fifth grade teacher, on a video for this special occasion where students answered the question “What does it mean to honor a veteran?” Check out the video below!

1st Place Win for Cornerstone at Sycamore’s Pumpkin Fest Parade!

Posted on: November 1st, 2016 by Admin

Cornerstone’s float won the 1st place trophy in the non-commercial division of the Sycamore Pumpkin Fest Parade on Sunday, October 30, 2016! The theme of this year’s festival was “A Parade of Pumpkins,” and Cornerstone’s float featured “A Parade of Pumpkin Sports” set up as a locker room/field house with pumpkins painted to look like soccer balls, basketballs, and volleyballs. Cornerstone offers these sports along with track & field for junior high students, and cheer for junior high and high school girls.

Cornerstone junior high cheerleaders led the group along with student athletes in uniform, student fans, and parents who represented Cornerstone by wearing CCA gear. The back of our float featured a basketball hoop and students dribbled and shot basketballs as they walked in the parade. A big thank you to parent Mike Giuliano for working on the float carpentry and to each person who represented Cornerstone in the parade!

God’s Creation and Creativity at Miss Mikan’s Summer Art Camp

Posted on: June 30th, 2016 by Admin

Each June, Cornerstone’s art teacher, Miss Sarah Mikan, hosts an art camp inviting grade school students from CCA and the community for five days of learning techniques and applying creativity to several projects. The week culminates with a Friday evening art gallery; a very special time where the students get to show off their work to family and friends.

For the theme of art camp this summer, Miss Mikan chose “Creation.” Each project the students worked on centered on God’s creation. Miss Mikan taught the students that God has created art and that their talent comes from him. Each day they read from God’s word together, and high school students from the community aided Miss Mikan in her teaching. The students learned techniques using oil paint, watercolors, acrylic, pencil, and more. These budding artists then used these techniques in their very own pieces of artwork.

Miss Mikan says, “We incorporated science and art in steps that the students will be able to repeat. The end result of our gallery gave glory to God’s gifts, creativity, and power through a child to communicate through art. I was very impressed with the talent this year. I loved having each student with us!”

Master Gardeners Instruct Cornerstone Summer Day Camp Students

Posted on: June 2nd, 2016 by Admin

Cornerstone Christian Academy summer day camp students are enjoying digging into their summer garden with instruction from University of Illinois Extension Master Gardener Interns.

This year Cornerstone summer day camp has a special time of gardening each Thursday where Master Gardener interns Nanette Phillips and Christy Krupa teach the children about seed germination, how to keep plants healthy and growing, and how insects, critters, and animals affect a garden. Cornerstone’s little gardeners will plant and nurture flowers, herbs, and vegetables. “It’s good for the children to learn these things; if we didn’t know how to grow healthy plants we wouldn’t have healthy things to eat,” says Nanette Phillips.

Master Gardener intern Christy Krupa attended Cornerstone from Kindergarten through 8th grade, and says that now as an adult it’s great to be giving back to the school through her work with the summer day camp students on their garden.

The mission of the University of Illinois Extension Master Gardener program is “Helping Others Learn to Grow.” Their web site states: “Master Gardeners involve people in improving the quality of life by helping them find sound management practices for home and urban natural resources, by creating aesthetically pleasing environments, by promoting well-being through people-plant interactions and horticultural therapy, and by contributing to a safe, abundant food supply through home fruit and vegetable production.”

Cornerstone’s Summer Day Camp serves children three to ten years old in the community. The theme of this year’s summer day camp is “Growing God’s Garden.”

Cornerstone’s First Art Gallery a Labor of Love

Posted on: May 16th, 2016 by Admin

Cornerstone Kindergarten through 12th grade art students, led by our art teacher Miss Sarah Mikan, were invited to feature their artwork at Northern Illinois University’s second annual Artigras festival in DeKalb. Cornerstone’s gallery opened on Saturday May 7th at the DeKalb Area Women’s Center from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. with live music provided by our student worship ensemble. Miss Mikan chose the theme “Creation” for the gallery, and featured scriptures with each class’ artwork. The main theme Bible verses that Miss Mikan chose to center the gallery around are from Psalm 33:6-9, “By the word of the LORD the heavens were made, their starry host by the breath of his mouth. He gathers the waters of the sea into jars; he puts the deep into storehouses. Let all the earth fear the Lord; let all the people of the world revere him. For he spoke, and it came to be; he commanded, and it stood firm.”

“Every age group was represented and it was so awesome to see the way the kids’ faces lit up as they came in the doors and saw their art hung in a lit gallery case,” Miss Mikan said. She had her students use different mediums for their artwork varying from yarn fibers to watercolor to senior high school art student Meredith Guio’s showcase, which focused on sketching.

Miss Mikan gives much credit to Meredith Guio and sophomore art student, Noah Whitfield, who were an integral part of the preparation and set-up of Cornerstone’s gallery. Miss Mikan also says it was a joy to work with Anna Marie Coveny of the DeKalb Area Women’s Center.

Cornerstone commends Miss Mikan and her team for glorifying God with their artwork in our community! Cornerstone’s gallery may be viewed by appointment through May 28th on Fridays and Saturdays between 7:00 to 9:00 p.m.
