Cornerstone Wins 1st Place at WYSE Academic Challenge

Posted on: February 14th, 2017 by Admin

Congratulations to Cornerstone’s high school WYSE (Worldwide Youth in Science and Engineering) team for winning 1st place in their division at the 2017 regional academic challenge competition which took place at Kishwaukee College on February 7, 2017. Twelve students of the team of sixteen earned individual awards, and junior Noah Whitfield placed first overall in the category of Engineering Graphics. Cornerstone’s team will advance to the WYSE Sectional competition that will take place at Northern Illinois University on March 2, 2017.

Worldwide Youth in Science and Engineering is an international program headquartered at the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana.  WYSE offers the annual Academic Challenge competition, a summer camp, and other programs.  The goal of WYSE is to attract a greater number of talented and diverse students to careers in engineering and the sciences.

The Academic Challenge is a competitive series of tests created and administered by WYSE and offered to high school students in Illinois and Missouri. The tests are now administered by more than fifty community colleges and universities and are designed to present a challenge to the brightest high school students.

Test material is drawn from senior high school and freshman level college curricula. Written by teams of college and university faculty, subjects include biology, chemistry, computer science, engineering graphics, English, mathematics, and physics. Each test production team produces three tests of increasing levels of difficulty for regional, sectional, and state finals. Students compete as individuals and as part of a team, and they have forty minutes to complete multiple-choice tests that range in length from thirty questions (Computer Science) to one hundred questions (English).
