Cornerstone Welcomes Sixth Grade Students to Junior High School

Posted on: July 15th, 2016 by Admin

This fall, Cornerstone’s secondary program will welcome sixth grade students into the secondary school hallways and classrooms. Traditionally, Cornerstone elementary school has included Kindergarten through sixth grade and students have not entered Cornerstone’s secondary program until seventh grade.

Cornerstone’s education committee recently presented a well thought out and prepared plan to Cornerstone board members that showed the many benefits of having sixth grade students become a part of our junior high program. This plan came together after much collaboration between our secondary staff and the committee also consulting with current and former teachers. The Board of Directors approved this plan. Current Cornerstone families with students that will enter sixth grade in the fall were contacted and each family is favorable to this change. The decision for these sixth grade students to move up to Cornerstone’s junior high program has been unanimous for all concerned parties!

moving on up

There are numerous benefits to having Cornerstone sixth grade students become a part of our junior high program. The maturity level of sixth grade students has been found to blend better with seventh and eighth grade students. Sixth grade students will also benefit from learning subjects from a variety of teachers throughout the school day as these teachers have different areas of expertise, personalities, and teaching styles. Cornerstone sixth grade students will also benefit spiritually from the retreats and service opportunities that junior high students participate in.

Cornerstone staff is enthusiastic about having sixth grade students join the secondary program. Mrs. Trisha Gonzalez, who has been an innovative and dynamic teacher at CCA for twelve years, will continue to teach language arts, and Mr. Chris Barwegen, who is well liked by our students for his sense of humor and incorporating many fun ideas into his classroom teaching, will continue to teach science and math. Mr. Bob Edwards will move into a full-time role teaching bible at Cornerstone from sixth grade through high school. Mrs. Penny Hanania will continue to teach history at our high school level and also expand her junior high teaching role to include teaching history for sixth through eighth grades.

Mr. Drew Whitfield, junior high and high school principal, and Mr. Tom Olmstead, Administrator, are available for questions about this exciting change at Cornerstone Christian Academy. Please call the school office if you would like to reach them at 815-895-8522.

HAVE YOU DOWNLOADED WINDOWS 10 YET?

Posted on: July 14th, 2016 by Admin

Cornerstone wants to let our parents know that Microsoft giving away a FREE download of Windows 10 to eligible computer users that currently have Windows 7 or 8 installed.

This is a limited time offer that will expire 7/29/16.

windows 10

If you have been undecided about updating to Windows 10, consider that beginning this fall, Cornerstone is going to begin using a combination of “Microsoft Office 365 Online for Education” and Windows 10 for our students. If you have Windows 10 on your home computer (and an internet connection) then your student will be able to “log in” to their account from home to work on homework papers, presentations, etc. that rely on Microsoft Word, PowerPoint or Excel. This is most applicable to high school students, and may also benefit students in grades six through eight.

If you don’t have (or want) Windows 10, don’t worry – you do not have to upgrade. If you already have Windows 7 or 8 and have been thinking over an upgrade, this may be the time to act. For more information about getting the download, you can do a web search, or follow this link:
