Presenting Cornerstone Third Grade American Indian Projects!

Posted on: April 29th, 2016 by Admin

Each spring, Mrs. Dorf’s third grade class works hard on artistic and educational displays of American Indian life in the early 1800’s, before the Civil War. The students choose one tribe from the Iroquios, Sioux, Cherokee, Ojibwa, Nootka, and Hopi to study in detail. They learn about and create a model of how these tribes lived, what their homes were made of, what they traded, if they farmed and/or hunted their food, and what their culture was like. Then they present their projects and findings to their classmates as well as our Kindergarten students!

Fantastic work, third grade students and Mrs. Dorf!!

Posted on: April 19th, 2016 by Admin

Cornerstone high school juniors, Ryan Hudson and Eric Zhang, both competed at the state level of the Worldwide Youth in Science and Engineering (WYSE) Academic Challenge on Monday, April 11, 2016. Both young men competed in the 300 division; Ryan Hudson took third place in the category of Engineering Graphics, and Eric Zhang placed fifth in the category of Physics.  Cornerstone congratulates these exemplary students on their success in advancing through the regional and sectional WYSE competitions, and now excelling above many other competitors in the state finals.

WYSE is an international program headquartered at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. WYSE offers annual Academic Challenge competitions at the regional, sectional, and state levels, a summer camp, and other programs.  The goal of WYSE is to attract a greater number of talented and diverse students to careers in engineering and the sciences.  WYSE seeks to be known by, “Fostering excellence in mathematics and sciences among the youth of the United States and the world.”

The WYSE Academic Challenge is a competitive series of tests that are designed by WYSE to present a challenge to the brightest high school students.  Test material is drawn from senior high school and freshman level college curricula. Written by teams of college and university faculty, subjects include biology, chemistry, computer science, engineering graphics, English, mathematics, and physics. Each test production team produces three tests of increasing levels of difficulty for regional, sectional, and state finals. Students compete as individuals and as part of a team, and they have forty minutes to complete multiple-choice tests that range in length from thirty questions (Computer Science) to one hundred questions (English).

Miss Jyllann Torres is Cornerstone Christian Academy’s featured teacher!

Cornerstone is thankful that Miss Torres joined our preschool staff this year as Mrs. Cantrell’s teacher’s aide. Miss Torres is musically gifted and she puts those talents to good use as our preschool music teacher, and as the co-director of our spring musical, The Wizard of Oz!

Miss Torres graduated from Cornerstone in 2013, and she says that it is a privilege for her to be back working at CCA now. “I love the Christian atmosphere and being a part of the close-knit Cornerstone family and [also] being able to influence little lives for Jesus.”

It’s not a surprise that in her free time Miss Torres loves to either be in the audience at a theatre or perform on stage, as she is a fantastic singer and actress! Miss Torres also enjoys going bowling.

Miss Torres says that her favorite Bible verse is Jeremiah 29:11, “‘For I know the plans I have for you,’” declares the LORD, “‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.’” She says that this verse reminds her to trust God because only He knows our full potential and our future.

Thank you Miss Torres for your loving dedication and hard work with our preschool students and as you teach our students the joys of singing and performing!
