Science Olympiad at Cornerstone a Great Success!

Posted on: February 29th, 2016 by Admin

On the evening of Friday, February 26th, 2015, Cornerstone hosted our first ever Science Olympiad and it was a great success! Students and their families had a blast learning through barge building, building marshmallow towers, looking through microscopes, racing tin cans, building paper airplanes, launching gummy bears, creating balloon zip-lines, bridge building, and more!

The students who won each event were honored with ribbons at our all school 40th birthday party assembly on Monday, February 29th.  The purpose of this event was to promote STEM: Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics activities at Cornerstone.  Cornerstone is working to include STEM enhancements throughout our school’s curriculum, and to increase the array of learning opportunities in these subject areas.  The goal is to give students the following skills: adaptability, complex communication, social skills, non-routine problem solving, self-management, and systems thinking.

Please check out more STEM information on our website under “Academics” then “STEM,” or by clicking here.

Thank you to Mrs. Hannah Mott and her team of teachers who worked so hard to make this STEM event a challenging and fun experience for our K-12 Cornerstone families!  Please check out the full album of pictures on our Facebook page or by clicking here.

Cornerstone’s Center for Career Advancement welcomed Mr. Dennis Barsema last Wednesday morning as he spoke to our junior high and high school students about “How to Lead in Today’s Socially Responsible World.”

Mr. Barsema is a Social Entrepreneur, Impact Investor, and Instructor of Social Entrepreneurship and Microfinance at Northern Illinois University.  Barsema spoke to the students about learning from failure quickly and smashing fear.  He gave the personal example about not letting stuttering, which he struggles with, keep him from going into business and sales.

Cornerstone alumnus, Dan Kapper, also spoke briefly at this event and told the students that the foundation that Cornerstone gave him helped set him up for success.  Mr. Kapper is now the video director at OC Creative, Inc., a DeKalb Based video and design agency.

The Daily Chronicle wrote an article about this event.  Click on the title below for a direct link to the article:

CCA Featured Teacher Miss Rachel Jobe

Posted on: February 9th, 2016 by Cornerstone

Miss Rachel Jobe is new to teaching sixth grade at Cornerstone, but she is not new to the school by any means. As a former student of Cornerstone from preschool through high school, Miss Jobe was significantly influenced by the faculty’s deep love for the Lord and their willingness to openly share their faith.

Miss Jobe says that God is teaching her that even though she doesn’t have all the answers, He does. She says, “I can rest assured that God will guide me with a plan more perfect than I could ever make my own.” She also says that she enjoys the reminders of God’s enduring promises and love that come up in the conversations she has with her students during Bible class,

Miss Jobe has a passion for horses and riding. She says, “one of the many things I love to do during the summer is to work at Honey Rock—a Christian camp in northern Wisconsin. As a horsemanship instructor, I get to help my students learn more about God through horses. It’s a beautiful experience when a horse and rider learn to work as a team!”

Miss Jobe’s favorite thing that has happened at Cornerstone this year has been getting to know her students more on the adventure they had on their field trip to Russel Woods in Genoa.

Check out this wonderful video that Miss Rachel Jobe created that shows “Life in Sixth Grade.”
